Gamlitz – unique enjoyment
With over 550 ha of vineyards and about 180 wine-growing estates Gamlitz is the biggest wine-growing borough of Styria. Gamlitz is famous for its vinification of wines which have turned into a must-have around the world. Moreover there has developed a culinary culture in and around Gamlitz which attracts more and more people. The proximity to the capital city as well as to the spas has turned Gamlitz to a central starting point for unforgettable day trips. No matter which season: Gamlitz is always worth a visit.
Springtime in the Styrian wine-growing country
Disvovering Gamlitz is always worth it. For instance in spring when the rough winter still dominates the rest of Austria, the first buds already show up on the sunny vines of Gamlitz. The mild Mediterranean climate privileges the region and provides unique enjoyment. For example around the middle of March when “Gamlitz unbars”or around Easter when the winegrowers present the new vintage in a grand tasting. What about an extensive walk through the vineyards? Or a discovery tour from vineyard to vineyard? Free of charge. With the service taxi. Gamlitz keeps surprising you. Just give it a try!
Summer in the sunny South: enjoy and relax
If you are up to huge hotel-empires or Ballermann-holidays, then this will not be the right choice for you. In summer Gamlitz and its surroundings present themselves as quiet places where you can relax and enjoy. In neat, down-to-earth ambiance but with a wide variety of opportunities. From sunbathing, bathing in the new ponds, cycling - and hiking tours to varied cultural attractions, for example if Kurt Ostbahn invites to an Open Air at a vineyard. Gamlitz has become an insider tip – even beyond the borders. If you ever experience the region’s idyll, you will never get away from it again……
Golden autumn: the most important time for the area
When the region starts to change from a saturated, ample green into an amazing play of colours, the most beautiful time is about to come. In the vineyards the grapes ripen under the mild, golden autumn sun and reach their high quality. And along the South Styrian street which is part of the border between Austria and Slovenia it’s high time for chestnuts and “Sturm”. During September and October the rooms are booked early in the year, especially for the first October weekend when Gamlitz celebrates its grape harvest. Nevertheless there are various opportunities to gain this experience during this “golden time”. For example during the actual wine harvest, where guest are readily welcome to join or simply listen to the sounds of the klapotetz – the symbol of the region.
Winter and no time for boredom
In November the autumn hits yet another peak with the presentation of the “Youngster” among the Styrian wines – called “Junker” and the celebration that goes with it. After that tranquillity settles in the region which doesn’t mean that it gets tedious. The Advent season, the ice wine harvest, the christening of the wine at the end of December with its traditional wine tasting in the cellars of the wine-growers, as well as the colourful carnival time bring a more than welcome change to the region. The hiking tours through the snow-covered vineyards have their own uniqueness. Moreover the spas in the hotels provide the guests with a relaxing atmosphere. This closes the progression of the seasons until the first mild days in March herald the next spring.
